After the ‘birth’ of the EveryDIGsexism project at the 2015 Chartered Institute for Archaeologists conference in Cardiff, conversations on Twitter suggested the need for an ‘#ArchSwan’ hashtag.
This is based on the Athena Swan Scheme. The Athena Swan Scheme (established in 2005) is the fantastic work of the Equality Challenge Unit, which aims to
” encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment in higher education and research.”
From this Scheme, the #ArchSwan tag was born. We aim to tweet about, champion, and raise awareness of excellent practice in equality by both individuals and companies in archaeology. We hope, by doing this, we will encourage others to aspire to achieve the same level of excellence. Sexism does not only have to be challenged by calling out negative practice, but by championing excellent practice.
If you would like to praise someone using the #ArchSwan tag(we are open to short tweets, or even the occasional blog post for publication on this site) please get in touch with us.
